Stem cells, or "mother cells" as they are called,
are very unique cells with the potential to treat many different
diseases. Stem cells or "hematopoetic
stem cells"
are primitive cells that have the ability to remain as stem
cells, or become more specialized cells such as a muscle cell,
a red blood cell, or a brain cell.
Through the research of stem cells, scientists are learning
how an organism develops from a single cell, and how healthy
cells can replace damaged cells. This is known as regenerative
or reparative medicine. With
stem cells, scientists can actually
grow or rejuvenate specific tissue cells. As you can imagine,
this is very promising for the treatments of different diseases
such as cancer and birth defects. |
