| Someone without
a drug addiction might have a difficult time seeing the common
activities that give rehabilitated drug users a sudden urge
to revert to their addictions. Simple things like room decoration,
diet and exercise, music, and hobbies all play an important
role in helping users avoid the temptation to slip back into
their old habits. Those living with recovering addicts can help
by promoting good habits and habitats.
Diet and Exercise- One of the leading causes of drug addiction
is depression. A healthy lifestyle can play a huge role in
keeping a sound mind. So drug rehabilitation relies heavily
on general health. Exercise should be outside in the fresh
air whenever possible. Diet should consist of balanced meals
and supplemental vitamins. Substitute fruit juices for soda
or coffee. Try to cut back on snacks, and schedule meals for
the same times every day. With a healthy diet and the absence
of drugs, a rehabilitated user will enjoy the benefits of
more energy and motivation.
Music- Some music actively discourages
drug rehabilitation
through lyrics. The danger in these songs is obvious, but
there are some kinds of music will subtly encourage isolation
and depression. Obviously, a person can’t listen to
‘happy jack’ music for 24/7, but watch out for
long hours spent listening to music alone. Have something
lively playing as a backdrop while doing chores. Wearing headphones
is a sign that music is isolating a person and may be making
them feel depressed.
Color Schemes and Lighting- A room with lots of dark colors
and little contrast might also promote isolation and/or depression.
Of course fluorescent tie-die isn’t the way to go either,
but white, off-white, sky blue, and other soft colors provide
a better atmosphere for a healthy mind. Lighting is also important.
Closed shades and low light levels sometimes make drug rehabilitation
more difficult.
Hobbies- Encourage rehabilitated drug users to engage in
a hobby that brings out their creative talents. Writing, artwork,
wood work, and collecting are just a few things that might
help keep them active and provide a good outlet for negative
feelings. If they have no former hobbies to revert to, stores
like The Hobby Lobby might spark their interests. They literally
have hundreds of start-up hobby kits.
The difficulties in drug rehabilitation are more than enough
to discourage recovering addicts. Even a little help could
mean the difference between failure and success.
